The value of words

DJ 2014 coverI’ve been thinking about the value of words of late, largely because I do so love words in all their various forms, but also because this month marks the first time ever (despite having gained a degree in Journalism several – ahem – years ago now) that I will be formally paid for an article by Fast Company SA, no less, for their grand Dec/Jan issue on the most innovative companies globally and in SA.

So it all came to rest lightly and beautifully a little earlier this afternoon when I had a discussion with Grace, who is six, about my blog. I asked her what she thought I should write my blog about for this month.

“What is a blog?” she asked.

“Well,” I said, thinking as I went, “it’s a place on the internet where you tell your own stories.”

She nodded sagely.

“And what stories do you tell?” she asked again.

“Here, I’ll show you,” I said, and we scrolled through the home page of this blog looking at the pictures. The last two posts both happen to have pictures of the barefoot husband (and father of Grace) on, so by the time we got down to the third post she said,

“ It’s about feet!” and smiled broadly.

“Well, kind of – it’s a lot about a person with bare feet because I write about your dad a lot.”

“Oh, what else do you write about?”

“Well, mostly about the people I like, places I visit, and things I think about.”

And then her sister, Katie, who is nine, joined the conversation just as I was asking “So, what should I write about this month?”

Grace’s face lights up, “Oh! You should write about your children – Katie and me!”

And there it is, the ultimate power of words. There is no value that can describe the moment of uncomplicated inclusion in a few simple words.

Beyond value, and more appreciated than they will ever know.
